A temporary live operation inside the box office of Capital One Arena, by UK betting company William Hill, has pioneered the first sportsbook in the state of Washington DC. Although not quite what was initially planned, the pop-up sportsbook will operate from 11 am until 11 pm daily with ten kiosks and seven ticket booths.
A provisional license was granted, valid until 31st of January 2021, with the partnering of William Hill’s Las Vegas subsidiary, American Wagering Inc, and the owner of Capital One Arena, Monumental Sport.
The permanent structure is currently under construction with the opening expected in Autumn. The sportsbook building is planned to cover 6,500 square feet and have multiple stories at the old Greene Turtle restaurant site.
The William Hill - Monumental team were ahead of the pack to submit an application to the Office of Lottery and Gaming last December for the prized Class A license. What’s more, two other provisional licenses have been approved to companies, NYX Digital Gaming and Sports radar Solutions LLC, sellers of software, data and equipment for sports betting. The temporary licenses are awarded whilst their permanent licence applications are being reviewed.
